Clotheslines in refugee camps serve as infrastructure for daily survival and resilience. Women and children undertake the chores of managing clotheslines and safeguarding cultural practices in harsh, dangerous environments. The collages depict clotheslines in Gaza refugee camps, with paper Tatreez patterns, and other embellishments. Tatreez is the unique embroidery of the Palestinian people. The collages evoke crowded camp conditions and recall the loss of land, villages, and homes, while Palestinian culture, art, history, and tradition live on.

Then & Now zine contains words and images related to the artist's own experience as a hostage of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine during a hijacking in 1970. Together, the collages and zine speak to the loss, trauma, and grief that occupation and war impose upon children

All proceeds from this exhibit will be donated to the Middle East Children's Alliance, (MECA).

Ryn Hodes (she/her): is a queer, disabled, Jewish artist. Originally from NYC, Ryn has lived in Florence for eight years. She is a social worker by profession, and worked with survivors of violence for thirty years, most recently at Safe Passage in Northampton. Now retired, Ryn is engaged as a writer and art-maker, and is active in the movement for Palestinian liberation and the support of refugees.
