Feet on the ground, head in the sky
Emi Gregory
Artist Statement
Emi Gregory is an artist and farmer living off in the woods of Huntington, MA. Emi began linocut printmaking in 2023. Her pieces often comment on social and environmental issues because she turns most of her prints into stickers. For this project, instead of focusing on issues, she wanted to study grounding elements in nature that offer perspective and comfort.
This collection is an exploration of trees in winter. Even in ‘normal’ times, February is a hard month for the winter sads; in abnormal times, connecting with nature is even more vital. Holding a palm to a tree trunk or looking up at the canopy and watching branches sway and interplay are comforting practices for Emi. These small acts can provide a sense of place, groundedness, and belonging in the ecosystem. The appreciation of trees evokes a lyric from This Must Be The Place by the Talking Heads: “Feet on the ground, head in the sky, it’s ok, I know nothing’s wrong.” The linoprints and ink drawings in this collection seek a tree’s balance of delicate and towering, strength and flexibility, and rootedness in community.
